EOS 1 mark lll
Canon’s single-plate, full-frame 36 x 24mm* CMOS sensor exhibits extremely high-sensitivity characteristics and provides the EOS-1Ds Mark III with the same viewing coverage as 35mm film cameras. Additionally, Canon has optimized the performance of the new sensor with a revised microlens array and improved photodiode structure that combine to deliver a wide ISO speed range for superb adaptability in any lighting environment. Full-frame also lets you maximize the dramatic impact of photos taken with Canon ultra wide-angle and fisheye lenses.
The EOS-1Ds Mark III improves on Canon’s already excellent noise reduction technology. Utilizing an advanced, 2nd generation on-chip noise reduction circuit, the new technology works superbly at all ISO speeds, but really excels when shooting at the high end of the ISO scale and for long exposures. New High ISO speed noise reduction* automatically reduces noise-artifacts depending on the ISO speed setting for noticeably cleaner images even when shooting at the highest ISO. The improved long exposure noise reduction feature** can be activated when required and significantly lowers noise within shadow areas to produce outstanding images of nightscapes or whenever a slow (1 second or longer) shutter speed is used.
Capture fine highlight details with the EOS-1Ds Mark III’s Highlight Tone Priority function*. This intelligent new feature expands the dynamic range of highlights by one stop and greatly improves gradation in high-key areas. Light grays and faint pastels transition smoothly to clean highlights, revealing subtle nuances and giving your photographs more depth and realism than you ever thought possible.
The full-frame, 35mm CMOS sensor means more than just pixels — it also allows you to realize the full expressive potential of Canon’s superb line of EF lenses. Compared to smaller APS-C sensors, the CMOS sensor in the EOS-1Ds Mark III gives you a wider angle of view for more creative options and breathtakingly expansive images. You’ll also appreciate the longer focal length that the full-frame 35mm sensor affords. This produces a markedly shallower depth of field than that of an APS-C sensor, enhancing background blur while maintaining subject size.
Your means of photographic expression are virtually limitless with the EOS-1Ds Mark III. Extended lens support via the full-frame CMOS sensor allows you to use Canon’s line-up of special lenses to their fullest effect. Experience the world through the mind-bending vision of the EF 15mm fisheye, or enjoy the tilt-shift capabilities of specialized TS-E wide-angle lenses. The EF 14mm ultra wide-angle rectilinear lens delivers razor-sharp images from edge-to-edge, making it ideal for close interiors and crowded street scenes. Rounding out the lineup of truly special lenses for the discriminating photographer are the Canon IS (Image Stabilizer) lenses, available in both zoom and fixed focal lengths. These innovative lenses noticeably reduce blurred images caused by camera shake.
The raw power of Canon’s cutting-edge Dual “DIGIC III” delivers vastly improved processing power to cut through the mountains of data generated by the 21.1-megapixel CMOS sensor. Unique to digital cameras, the Dual “DIGIC III” performs parallel signal processing, allowing for 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion. The end result is richly detailed photos that exhibit wonderfully lifelike colors and smooth tonal gradation. Additionally, the extremely high processing efficiency of Dual “DIGIC III” conserves battery power, enables faster memory card access and provides for the deployment of Canon’s improved noise reduction technology. Dual processors also increase the burst performance of the EOS-1Ds Mark III, providing up to 56 shots at a burning 5fps*.
Thanks to its accelerated image processing capabilities, the EOS-1Ds Mark III is able to efficiently handle 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion. This means that tonal gradation for RAW images is now split into an impressive 16,384 bits per channel rather than the 4,096 bits that conventional 12-bit A/D conversion produces. Large photographs and magazine spreads now come alive with impressive tonal gradation and excellent color definition. This superior quality extends to 8-bit JPEGs. Since these images are created from higher-quality RAW images, tonal skipping is noticeably reduced, thereby vastly increasing image quality.
The EOS-1Ds Mark III defies convention by providing an impressively wide ISO speed range despite the small 6.4µm pixel-size found on its 21.1-megapixel CMOS sensor. Select the proper speed setting in either 1/3- or 1-stop increments from a standard range of 100 to 1600, or expand the range from a low ISO of 50 to a maximum ISO of 3200 via the ISO expansion menu*. For added convenience, the ISO setting is now displayed conveniently in the viewfinder as well as on the top LCD. You can also set the ISO speed to shift automatically** if the proper exposure lies outside your selected shutter and aperture settings
Expand the limits of your photographic horizon with Picture Styles. This handy function gives you the freedom to apply a specific style to your photos at the moment of exposure. This is much the same as choosing a particular film to achieve a desired texture or feeling. Select from six preset style settings (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome) and three user-defined styles. You can also customize each style by changing settings for sharpness, contrast, color saturation, color tone, filter and toning. Additional Picture Style files can be downloaded from Canon’s Picture Style web site and then easily transferred to the EOS-1Ds Mark III. You can also apply Picture Style files to RAW image data to achieve the same effects as when using in-camera Picture Styles. The new Picture Style Editor allows you to fine-tune colors and create original Picture Style files.
Maintain precise color reproduction in nearly any lighting environment via the highly versatile White Balance function. Select Auto and let the EOS-1Ds Mark III decide the proper white balance for you, or choose from up to five custom settings of your own. White balance can also be selected from six common presets (Daylight, Shade, Cloudy/Twilight/Sunset, Tungsten, White Fluorescent and Flash), or set it manually between 2500° and 10,000°K in 100°K increments. To ensure fast, accurate color compensation, the WB Correction function allows you to quickly add a blue/amber or magenta/green bias in ±9 steps.
For particularly tricky lighting, the convenient White Balance Bracketing function creates a set of three images with one press of the shutter, applying either a blue/amber or magenta/green bias to the current WB setting. This is ideal for dealing with problems incurred in mixed lighting environments. Shots are bracketed in 1-level increments up to ±3 levels.
Record your photos as either JPEG or RAW image data — or both simultaneously! Canon’s RAW image data delivers superlative image quality thanks to 14-bit color and lossless compression. It is ideal for obtaining the finest possible reproduction of your photos and for modifying images during post-production operations. The sRAW image type gives you the same freedom in post-production but generates files about half the size of RAW. For reducing file sizes while maintaining outstanding image quality, the EOS-1Ds Mark III offers a choice of four JPEG settings (L, M1, M2 and S) at any one of ten compression ratios.
Preserve precious image data on popular CompactFlash, SD, and SDHC memory cards, or record directly onto an external USB 2.0 storage device via the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2/E2A. A variety of different recording functions are available, which let you:
· Record the same image on both cards and external media simultaneously (including recording of RAW + JPEG and sRAW + JPEG image combinations).
· Record a RAW image on one card and a JPEG image on the other.
· Set memory cards and external media to record different file sizes of the same image (L, M1, M2, S, RAW, sRAW). Another valuable feature is auto switching of recording media. When the current media becomes full, the camera automatically changes to another media for uninterrupted recording. In order to back up data after shooting, you can copy images freely between memory cards and external USB storage devices connected via the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2/E2A. What’s more, the EOS-1Ds Mark III’s Dual “DIGIC III” can access memory cards faster than ever before, including new Ultra UDMA-compatible CF cards.
That’s how extraordinarily responsive the EOS-1Ds Mark III is. The super-fast, approximately 0.2-second startup time puts you instantly in the last shooting mode set and a mere 55ms shutter release lag time means you’ll never miss a moment. Dual “DIGIC III” combines with single-line, 8-channel reading to deliver up to 5fps* continuous shooting with a maximum burst of 56 shots — incredible performance considering such high-resolution images**. The high-speed shutter maxes out at 1/8000 sec. and provides an eminently usable X-sync of 1/250 sec. You’ll hardly hear it when shooting in the new Silent Single Shooting mode, which reduces both shutter and reflex mirror noise for those occasions when you don’t want to intrude.
Canon’s legendary autofocus technology is now even better. Redesigned from the ground up, the AF system of the EOS-1Ds Mark III provides increased sensitivity, easier navigation and improved performance in the field. The new AF sensor features 19 cross-type AF points — extremely accurate when shooting with f/2.8 and f/5.6 lenses — and 26 Assist AF points for quicker, more precise focusing. Instead of being clustered in the middle, the user-selectable cross-type AF points are now distributed evenly across the entire sensor area and can be set to the inner or outer nine AF points. The AF points are expandable when using manual AF point selection. Canon has also incorporated a sensor to detect the light source characteristics. Slight focusing errors can occur due to different spectral characteristics of the light source. Such errors are corrected automatically. This assures consistent and highly precise autofocus even in challenging environments and under varying light sources. For more intuitive operation to meet the needs of demanding professionals, the Multi-controller can be configured to select AF points*. You can also adjust the AI Servo AF tracking method and subject priority settings, focus tracking sensitivity and other AF parameters, giving you greater control over focusing strategies. There is even an AF micro-adjustment setting that allows you to register minute changes to the focus point for up to 20 lenses. Your custom AF settings can also be stored for easy recall depending on shooting conditions. Additionally, AF sensitivity has been expanded to cover a range of EV-1 to 18 (ISO 100 at normal temperatures) and improvements to the AI Servo AF now allow you to track and capture rapidly moving subjects in less than desirable lighting environments.
What a view. Composing shots has never been easier thanks to the bright, crystal-clear viewfinder featuring 100% scene coverage, a wonderfully wide 35° angle of view, 0.76 magnification (the largest in its class*) and a comfortable 20mm eye point.** To increase viewfinder magnification, the EOS-1Ds Mark III uses a large, newly developed pentaprism made of highly refractive material. The included Ec-CIV focusing screen makes manual focusing a breeze and beautifully renders background blur effects. What’s more, it is easily interchangeable with all Canon Ec-series focusing screens to meet nearly any shooting requirement. All vital shooting information is neatly displayed in the viewfinder, including metering mode, ISO speed, battery level and image type
Accurate metering and precise exposure control assure you of beautiful images minus the guesswork. The EOS-1Ds Mark III employs an improved metering algorithm and a newly developed 63-zone metering sensor linked to the 19 cross-type AF points, giving you more consistent ambient and flash exposures less affected by light reflecting off the main subject. Four easily selectable metering modes combine with four shooting modes to deliver the right shooting combination for any assignment. For situations in which the proper exposure lies outside the selected range, the camera can automatically shift the ISO speed setting to achieve the proper exposure*.
The popular Live View function lets you forget about the viewfinder and work in real-time through either an external monitor or the built-in LCD. This is a great way to shoot when it is difficult or impractical to use the viewfinder, such as for tripod shots or remote photography. This is especially useful for studio photographers, who will appreciate the ease with which Remote Live View shooting allows composition of photos. Live View function reads directly from the CMOS sensor and features 100% field of view*, visual exposure and color check, manual focusing (with 5x and 10x magnification) and a video-out jack that connects the EOS-1Ds Mark III directly to a TV. Use the included EOS Utility 2.2* to set up an electronic viewfinder (EVF) on a computer via USB or via the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2/E2A — ideal for situations requiring remote access to the camera.
Make the EOS-1Ds Mark III behave the way you want with 57 Custom Functions. These intelligent, user-adjustable settings expand functionality, giving you increased shooting options and greatly enhancing camera usability customized to your particular needs. You can register up to three sets of Custom Functions in the camera memory or up to 10 sets per recordable media. Custom Function settings saved on recordable media can be read by other EOS-1Ds Mark III cameras — a huge timesaver for professionals or organizations with more than one camera.
The spacious 3.0-inch LCD of the EOS-1Ds Mark III is simply a joy to use. A crisply backlit 230,000-pixel screen and wide 140° viewing angle (horizontal and vertical) makes it easy to view images and access menus whether in bright sunshine or in the dark, and compose shots when using Live View function. Choose from seven brightness levels using the displayed gray scale to achieve the proper setting depending on the ambient light. Gamma has been added and the color range expanded to deliver performance that closely resembles a computer monitor. This makes it ideal for important color and exposure checks. Power consumption is minimal, too, reducing drain on the battery and thereby allowing for extended use
Viewing your photos, whether on location or post-assignment, requires fast, easy and logical access to recorded images. The EOS-1Ds Mark III performs admirably on all accounts, providing you with a convenient way to quickly display the large amount of data included with each photo. Pressing on the conveniently located INFO button toggles you through four different display modes showing the image, histograms and all metadata, including image size, shooting information and GPS information*. Images can be viewed one-by-one, or in groups of four or nine. For closer inspection of images, zoom in or out from 1.5x to 10x in 15 steps. Fast deletion of unwanted images (a function most professionals can appreciate) can be done safely, either individually or in batches
Designed for increased durability and to reduce dust generated within the camera, the electronically controlled mechanical shutter of the EOS-1Ds Mark III is capable of 300,000 cycles — the highest rating of any Canon camera. This rugged durability is matched by a lightning quick shutter release lag time of only 55ms and a viewfinder blackout time of 80ms, assuring rapid response in fast-moving situations. Available shutter speeds range from 30 seconds to 1/8000 second with a fast flash synch speed of 1/250 second. Two synch terminals are available, one for Canon Speedlites and another for non-Canon flash units.
Built-in reliability and sturdy construction assure you of rock-steady performance even in extreme environments. The tough magnesium-alloy chassis and body not only help protect against bumps and drops, but also act as an electromagnetic shield, allowing you to work under conditions that could cause other cameras to fail. To help protect against dust- and water, the EOS-1Ds Mark III incorporates protective sealing measures at 76 key points, such as camera controls and cover seams and employs O-ring seals at the memory card cover and battery compartment.
